Librarianship: A Personal Statement (Excerpt)

Description: The following is an excerpt from my personal statement essay submitted with my application to Indiana University's Master's of Library and Information Science program. The full statement can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/view/?al72ns5c4aodn09

In life, I feel as though I am always combining my character, passion, and experiences to create a gentle leader that can step in and light fires in the minds of today’s learners. In the future, I foresee myself as a librarian that is perpetually studying and exploring emerging technologies while teaching a new generation how to appreciate and enjoy the historical forms of reference that have helped guide us to where we are now. I want to lead my community by developing and implementing new learning environments that make these technologies available to all learners, and I want to play a role in supporting educators as they set the standard for our future leaders. Most importantly, I’ve learned that genuine passion, combined with strength in leadership, is an incredibly powerful antidote for societal apathy, and on behalf of this notion, I want to be an activist.
It has been said that librarians are the proverbial gate-keepers of information. While in many ways, this can be interpreted quite literally, we must also remember that librarians are also responsible for serving as the voice of those that freedom of information directly impacts: every human who has ever endeavored to gain knowledge and insight. With this in mind, I believe leadership should be a verifiable quality among librarians. As such, I see myself as a future gatekeeper of information, who doesn’t simply want to unlock the gate for learners, but teach other learners how to unlock the gate for themselves. Still, an effective teacher must also be an effective leader, and I strongly believe that my confidence and passion, as well as my graduate education at IUPUI’s school of Library Science, will be thoroughly utilized in my future vocation as a librarian and an information specialist.
